Emerging Nationals Program

Friday, July 31st, 2009

image004Perth 2011’s inaugural Emerging Nations Programme (ENP) intensive training camp athletes will take to the waters off Fremantle Sailing Club for the final time on the penultimate day of the inaugural Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships Emerging Nations Programme camp on Sunday 2 August in the Emerging Nations Programme/Fremantle Sailing Club Sprint Series.

The nine athletes from eight emerging sailing nations, ranging from sea bordering countries Chinese Taipei, Ecuador and Cook Islands to landlocked nations Moldova and Czech Republic have spent the past 10 days training under acclaimed Australian Olympic sailing coach Arthur Brett and Olympic Games Gold Medallist Belinda Stowell in a bid to develop their sailing abilities to a level that will see them qualify for the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

In what is an unprecedented initiative for international sailing, the Emerging Nations Programme is designed to encourage and assist developing and emerging sailing nations and their athletes to participate in the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships, which will be held in Fremantle between 3-18 December 2011. From this World Championship, it is hoped ‘emerging’ talent identified during the ENP will qualify to represent their country in sailing at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

The inaugural ENP intensive training camp is being held at Fremantle Sailing Club, Western Australia and is the first of seven intensive training camps to be held in WA between July 2009 and the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships in December 2011. The ENP focuses on Laser, Laser Radial and RS:X Windsurfers for both men and women.

Over the course of the ENP intensive training camps, up to 40 athletes, from as many nations that did not qualify in any sailing discipline at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, will be invited to Perth for a series of intensive training courses designed to improve their chances of earning a place in the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

The Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships Emerging Nations Programme is proudly supported by the Australian Federal Government and the Western Australian State Government.
