Queensland’s 420 sailors Angus Galloway & Alexander Gough and Elle Brake & Ashley Warlow win selection into Australia’s Youth Sailing team to compete in Turkey, mid July this year.
The Australian winners of this year’s OAMPS Youth 420 Championships -Boys are Galloway and Gough (16 yrs) and Girls are Brake (16) and Warlow (15). Following two events – the 2009/2010
International 420 Nationals and 2010 Youth Titles at Largs Bay, Adelaide, these two Qld 420 teams of Galloway & Gough and Brake & Warlow won selection into Australia’s Youth Sailing team to compete in Istanbul, Turkey in the 40th Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships. Both winning teams sailed against older sailors this year and are age-eligible to compete again at the next Youth Titles to be held at Botany Bay, Sydney in 2011.
The four Queensland 420 teams are grabbing a break before returning to RQYS in high spirits following various successes in the Sail Down Under Series then most importantly the 2010 OAMPS Youths. All sailors and association supporters would like to especially thank Queensland Academy of Sport and Yachting Aust. High Performance Coach Adrian Finglas; John Warlow, 420 Assistant Coach; Ken Hurling, Yachting Queensland President; and Peter Conde of RQYS for their on land and on water coaching and support throughout the regatta season and especially during the final days of the National Youth competition.
420 teams returning to RQYS include Sasha and Jamie Ryan who have also had success locally and interstate in a list of competitions such as the Qld 420 State Championships, NSW 420 State Titles, Sail Brisbane, Sydney International Regatta and Sail Melbourne. Jen Warlow & Georgie Toner also showed consistency. The final international competition at Largs Bay was sailed over five days in extreme conditions with temperatures hovering 43 degrees and light to no wind. Stamina, sailing consistency and good sportsmanship were essential.
The 420 teams would like to congratulate and thank all the other Queenslander sailors and supporters who rallied in the various boat parks, shared their thoughts, and competed at such a high level. It is this consistently highly competitive approach with shared moments of light relief that is the strength of the whole team and makes for our state’s top level 420 sailing.
After a short break you will find the teams, along with other members of the Yachting Qld’s High Performance Squad training on water and off and continuing their club racing at Royal Queensland. The 420 two person dinghy youth teams are all boys, all girls, sometimes mixed. They are usually aged between 14 to 18 years and keen to get out on trapeze and to handle a spinnaker.
So look out for the date and details of the Qld 420’s OPEN DAY. Join us for the opportunity to sail in an International 420, meet 420 sailors, coaches & supporters, talk with the team about training and competitions, see some of the action from the Sail Down Under Series & Largs Bay, share a BBQ and checkout several 420 boats for sale or hire.
