GLADSTONE RACE TACTICIANS PREPARE FOR TESTING TIME.

The complex nature of the coastal weather suggests the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race tacticians will need to constantly update their strategy.

Generally the coastal weather has become friendlier for offshore fishing with slight seas and soft winds over the past 48 hours.

When dawn broke this morning both Moreton Bay and the open ocean coast between Caloundra and Double Island Point was relatively calm under the grip of a soft sea breeze. Read more…

Hi Everyone,

What a week. We have now arrived safely in the Palma with all our equipment after logistically coordinating our car, an air freight shipment of masts, our European boat in Hamburg and unpacking a container in Rotterdam then getting ourselves across the Mediterranean sea to the largest island of Spain, Palma de Mallorca.

We have had only very limited time to prepare ourselves and our get equipment ready for the start of the third world cup event. So that Malcolm could spend at least a few days honey-mooning with his wife of 10 days before launching into the next event. Read more…

TRADE WIND FORECAST FOR GLADSTONE RACE.

The long range forecast of 15 to 22 knot South East Trade Winds has added an exciting element as the crews prepare for the 62nd Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race start on Good Friday April 2.

A high pressure system in the Tasman Sea promises to ridge a moderate to fresh south east air flow on to the Queensland coast providing the 49 yacht fleet with fast spinnaker sailing over the initial 42 n/mls to exit Moreton Bay via the Caloundra Fairway Buoy. Read more…

SPINNAKER TALES.

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

By Ian Grant.

Sunshine Coast dinghy sailing clubs have a proud history of producing Australian champions in the important junior classes.

The learn to sail program successfully introduced by the Mooloolaba Dinghy Club on the Mooloolah River has played an important role in several individual careers.

Naturally there is an element of fear when a young sailor steps into a Sabot for the first time but that is soon cast aside when they gain confidence and coordinate the required skills to sail free with the wind. Read more…

Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race

TUESDAY MARCH 23RD 2010.

Strong winds replaced by fickle breeze.

The 2010 Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race fleet could face an unpredictable weather system when they line up to contest the 62nd Blue Water classic on Good Friday April 2nd.

However race crews remained confident that an ideal spinnaker sailing south east breeze will return after the Cape Moreton wind recorder spun lazily through 10 different wind changes yesterday.

Moreton Bay and the important open ocean coastline between Caloundra and the entrance to Gladstone harbour were in a state of calm yesterday after being buffeted by strong winds since early January.

This current uncertain nature of the coastal weather suggest there is a strong possibility that the fleet of 50 yachts including the defending line honours champion Black Jack could face a supreme test of racing in light headwinds for the first time in recent years.

Sunshine Coast Yacht Club is organising the finish of the Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Race that starts from New Plymouth on 4th April. We are also the hosts for the skippers and their yachts while they stay at Mooloolaba. Special arrangements have been made for Customs and Quarantine clearance here. The yachts should arrive after the 10th April over about a week. This has generated a lot of visitors and as family and friends come from NZ, we have arranged accommodation for them.

We plan to attend the finish and take times for all competitors, then guide them to the Club wharf.

There has been great co-operation with the NZ organising committee that has been progressing since May last year. Their chairman,Ron Scott, will be here from the 8th and will help with the Race office.

The Race Presentation function will be held by our Club on Saturday,17th April
