SPINNAKER TALES.

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

By Ian Grant.

Sunshine Coast Ocean racing helmsman Mike O’Brien had a reasonable excuse to have missed relaxing at home in the brilliant autumn weather over the ANZAC weekend.

Mike O’Brien also temporarily placed his preparations for the 2010 Musto Etchells Australasian Winter championships on hold to accept the principal helming role on Bill Wild’s Wedgetail for the Yachting Queensland State IRC championship on Brisbane’s Moreton Bay.

It was an invitation he could not resist after playing a pivotal crew role with the exceptionally talented and determined Wedgetail crew when the sloop powered to a deserved overall win in the Brisbane to Gladstone Race over the Easter weekend.

Wedgetail has accumulated and impressive log book of results in the major Australian offshore races including her 2010 Brisbane to Gladstone race win over the Peter Harburg owned and Mark Bradford skippered Black Jack but has been sparingly raced in shorter course events. Read more…

WEDGETAIL WINS ANOTHER MAJOR – Yachting Queensland State IRC championship

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Bill Wild’s Hugh Welbourne designed and Kevin Costin built Wedgetail scored another impressive win in the Yachting Queensland State IRC championship on Moreton Bay over the weekend.

The month of April has proved to be hugely successful for owner Bill Wild and his Wedgetail crew.

They clearly showed they could ‘drag race’ with the best to score a popular overall win in the Brisbane to Gladstone blue water coastal classic over the Easter weekend and have followed this up with relatively comfortable 8 point win over the new Reichel Pugh 42 Black Jack Too and the Farr 40 Bribie Star in the six race Queensland championship.

Normally Bill Wild has accepted Wedgetail to be more suited to the longer offshore events including the Rolex Sydney Hobart and the Audi Sydney to Gold Coast races however both he and his talented crew have shown they were equally impressive over the short course format. Read more…

CLASSY KENNEDY’S

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Sunshine Coast World Masters Games sailing champion Mark Kennedy has developed a unique family and sporting bond with his teenage children Mitchell (17) and Madison (15).

The Buddina sailing family all won major individual championships during the past summer to lay claim to be Queensland’s most successful in the sport of strict one-design dinghy sailing.

However while father Mark is proud of his children’s results he remains adamant that his Matthew Flinders College students Mitchell (year 12) and Madison (year 10) achieve high marks later this year.

“It’s become very much a balancing act with sailing hardly mentioned before the assignments and homework is done”.

“Besides we have plenty of time for sailing talk when travelling between home and Brisbane where we race in Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron events on Waterloo Bay every weekend”. He said. Read more…

After one week in Hyeres, we are now ready for the start of our next competition, the fourth round of the ISAF World Sailing Cup. Over 110 boats in the 470 Men class have registered, one of the largest fleet sizes we have experienced in recent years.

The 470 is always continually building in popularity by strength in numbers, by nations competing and by the quality of the fleet. Due to the large number of boats the fleets will be split into two groups possibly three. Read more…
