Last weekend the Tasar state titles were held at Airlie Beach Sailing Club in the Whitsunday’s. This was a combined regatta with many classes sailing and a strong Tinaroo contingent present.
Four Tasars and four BIC’s made the trip south to represent our club and the hard work of the sailors in refining their skills over recent months reaped rewards.
A total of six races were held over the three day regatta in extremely varied conditions. At times the fleet was almost becalmed with the wind shifting around the southern half of the compass and at others the squalls produced some exhilarating fast planing reaches and tough beats to windward. It was a great opportunity for the Tasars to familiarise themselves with the area where the upcoming National Titles are to be held and for the BIC kids to experience different courses and conditions from those at home.
Whilst ashore we found good club facilities, meals, camping and the camaraderie of other passionate sailors. There were even some good sailing tips from the top crews shared over the presentation evening and much was learned by all who attended this great weekend of sailing.
Our thanks go out to The Whitsunday Sailing Club who hosted the regatta and to all who attended and contributed to the great success of the weekend. We hope that more sailors can plan to be there next year to make future regattas bigger and better.
Congratulations go to Peter and Aidan MacGregor for their success in winning the Tasar State Titles and to all of our sailors who represented Tinaroo with skill and pride.
Others to sail well were Scott Cant and Michael Overland who finished 3rd and Kieran and Dane Mouldey who finished 4th.
Of special note is the resilience and dedication to “off the beach sailing” demonstrated by Tinaroo members Guy and Jack Chester who were involved in a serious car accident while driving down on Thursday. After getting another car and repairing their badly damaged Tasar on the first sailing day they continued down to Airlie and completed the regatta. They’re a great inspiration to us all, well done.
