Sail Brisbane – Day 2

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

The 103 crews present for the first leg of the SailDownUnder series were greeted by a second day of intense racing. After another shifty day on the water Queensland Sailing Team members are again in promising positions overall.

On the Northern course Laser full rig athlete Ryan Palk has maintained his dominant position with top 2 placings in all three races. In the Laser radials, Queensland Academy of Sport competitor Mitchell Kennedy leads both open and youth divisions with some extremely consistent racing.

As the breeze moved around and finally settled, the start boat fired off racing on the southern course. Queensland athletes supported by high performance coaches Ben Callard and Marty Watson have taken control across the board of classes. In the 420 Galloway and Gough lead for the second day with wins in two races today. Read more…

From the F11 Association perspective

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Hi Everyone,

I’m up on my soap box now – please bear with me for a moment.

Many of you will be receiving the outflow of our sailing graduates in the future.

I’ve copied you in on the links below on the basis that you have some government or custodial role/position on matters of youth sailing in Australia. It’s not to just promote the F11s, but to keep you all in the loop that such activity is happening out there which I trust should be of some interest, even if only just a little.

From the F11 Association perspective, we are doing all we can to ensure our young sailing graduates “go to good homes” per se. We are not concerned what class, what association – just sailing after they leave us – Full Stop!

This year we have 40% of our NSW F11 fleet racing as junior skippers (under 15) – we just ran our first round of the NSW States with 90 boats and will expect an extra 20+ as our Green Fleet jump in the second round in February 2011. That’s 180-220 kids within the next 2-3 years who will be looking for a new home to go to; that is if we do our job right and retain their interest and enthusiasm. We are currently feeding around 90 kids per season to the great beyond.

The intent is to align in some manner all youth sailing groups/forums/programs, types and classes together in a cohesive mindset to better the outcomes of all our efforts in regard to Australian youth sailing.

Let’s pull in the same direction, employ the concept of pooling resources where applicable/possible and stay focused on the achievable goal of making sailing a Sport For Life for our charges. Read more…

After a closely fought last day, Angus Galloway and Alex Gough took out the Queensland 420 Championships for 2010. With a 15 – 20 knot gradient South Easter on the first day, Gough and Galloway won all three races, with consistent speed and tactical decisions.

pre race speed test

Helm Angus remarked on the day’s racing “…it was good to get out there to set up the new rig and test out some gear, and by the end of the day the boat and gear felt sorted…” Volunteering on the course for his first time was current 470 world champion Mathew Belcher, who found time to overlook racing and share his experience with the athletes after the first of two days sailing.   Read more…

RUNNING THE RHUMBLINES.

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

By Ian Grant.

The design pedigree of the Kevin Fogarty skippered Idle Time has continued to allow the sloop designed by West Australian based Naval Architect Kim Swarbrick to remain as the star performer in Whitsunday Sailing Club events.

One of the major reasons behind Idle Time’s domination is the sloop spends very little time lying idle secured to her mooring.

In fact both skipper and crew seem to spend more time on the deck than most other crews which instinctively builds an understanding on which ‘rope to pull’ to sail the ‘old girl’ consistently above her handicap rating.

Sure the onset of the tropical summer has been wetter and warmer this year with record rain drenching the Whitsundays however the conditions while remaining challenging have not interfered with Idle Time’s sailing program. Read more…

Official Lunch of the new Fremantle To Bali International Yacht Race

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Today marked the start of a new era of “big boat” ocean racing in Western Australia with the official launch of the Visit Indonesia Fremantle to Bali 2011 event hosted by Fremantle Sailing Club.

Fremantle Sailing Club’s Vice Commodore Kaye Riseley announced Visit Indonesia as the major sponsor, through a five-event partnership with the  Indonesian Government’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, starting in 2011.

“After months of planning, Fremantle Sailing Club is thrilled to be officially announcing the return of international ocean racing to Western Australia – after a gap of 14 years.”

“In partnership with the Indonesian Government’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism we look forward to the Race becoming the premier offshore sailing event on the Western Australian sailing calendar and possibly even being known as the Sydney to Hobart of the West”.

“At 1440 nautical miles, the event is more than two-and-a-half times the distance of the Sydney to Hobart, so it will be a real challenge for competitors,” Vice Commodore Riseley said. Read more…

SPINNAKER TALES

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

By Ian Grant.

The open water sailing course on Brisbane’s Waterloo Bay could become a ‘Torture Track’ when Sunshine Coast Laser sailors defend their International Sail Brisbane championships starting on Monday.

During the past week the predominately shallow water course has been whipped into a frenzy of white water by muscle testing south east trade winds.

According to the weather bureau the fleet headed by Noosa’s Queensland Olympic Laser champion are heading into a fresh wind series to decide the Yachting Queensland Sail Brisbane champion for 2010. Read more…

2010 Qld Sabre State Championships

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Susan Hextell the president of the Qld Sabre Association presenting John Nobbs with his trophies

The 2010 Qld Sabre State Championships were hosted by Cleveland Yacht Club, 17 boats entered for the event, the series comprised of 3 races on Saturday and 3 on Sunday, there was also a social side to the event with post race nibbles whilst viewing video footage of the Saturday races then onto the Redlands RSL for a meal.

Saturday’s weather forecast had a “strong wind warning” in place with gusts up to 30 knots recorded off Peel Island, the seas were really up and launching from the club was virtually impossible, fortunately the President of the Sabre Association had a “Plan B” in the sailing instructions so a decision was made to sail Saturday’s 3 races in Raby Bay which was quite successful with the majority of boats finishing all races thanks to the calmer waters.

Sunday was looking a little better with the forecast of 20 knots gusting to 25 knots, the seas were again pretty rough and with a high tide made it difficult to launch the boats for the morning race.  After lunch the last 2 races were sailed in a 20 knot breeze which was more comfortable for most.

The series was hotly contested and the results below show how close the racing was between the top 3 overall place getters. Read more…
