The Australian Sailing Team has released a new video, highlighting the major results from a very successful 2010 in which the team won two World Championships, won a Silver and Bronze medal at two others and a number of medals across the seven rounds of the ISAF Sailing World Cup.
The video can be viewed on the Australian Sailing Team website, www.australiansailingteam.com.au, or via the team’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/YachtingAUS.
The year began in style with Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen finishing second at the 2010 49er World Championship in the Bahamas, fighting their way back through the fleet after a tough start to the regatta to bring home the Silver medal.Next stop for Australian sailors was the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Miami where the 470 crew of Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page finished second while the Australian Women’s Match Racing Team crews of Nicky Souter, Stacey Jackson and Rayshele Martin, and Lucinda Whitty, Jessica Eastwell and Amanda Scrivenor were fourth and fifth respectively.
Arriving in Europe for the World Cup round in Palma, Spain, Nicky Souter, Nina Curtis and Jessica Eastwell won Silver in the Women’s Match Racing while Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page were fourth in the 470 class.
In Hyeres, France, just two weeks later Katie Spithill, Nina Curtis and Amanda Scrivernor were fourth in the Women’s Match Racing event while in the 470 class Mathew Belcher and stand in crew Will Ryan finished sixth.
The team then headed to Medemblik, Holland, for round five of the World Cup, the first time that the entire Australian Sailing Team had competed in the same regatta in 2010. The Delta Lloyd Holland Regatta proved to be a successful hunting ground for the Australians yet again with Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen winning Gold in the 49er class, Tom Slingsby leading home the Laser fleet and Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page continuing their great year with Silver in the 470 class. Jessica Crisp was fifth in the RS:X women’s fleet and Krystal Weir fifth in the Laser Radials, her first regatta back in the class for two years.
Slingsby then headed to Estonia where he won Bronze in the 2010 Laser European Championship before continuing his strong year in Germany with Gold at the World Cup round in Kiel. Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page also won Gold in Kiel with Jessica Crisp coming home with Bronze and the Women’s Match Racing crew of Katie Spithill, Jessica Eastwell and Angela Farrell finishing fifth.
At the 2010 IFDS World Championship in Medemblik Holland the Skud 18 crew of Daniel Fitzgibbon and Rachael Cox finished with Bronze in their first regatta together since the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games while Ame Barnbrook and Lindsay Mason qualified for the 2011 Australian Sailing Team with a fourth placed finish.
Just down the road at The Hague Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page were creating history with their 2010 470 World Championship victory making Page the most successful 470 sailor ever with the pair winning the event before the final medal race.
The Australians then headed to Weymouth for the final round of the World Cup and yet another taste of the 2012 London Olympic Games venue. Weymouth turned out to be a Gold mine for the Australian Sailing Team with four Golds and a Silver medal, with the Skud 18 crew of Daniel Fitzgibbon and Rachael Cox, 49er crew Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, Laser sailor Tom Slingsby and Women’s Match Racers Nicky Souter, Nina Curtis and Olivia Price all winning Gold, with 470 crew Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page finished with Silver.
A few weeks later in Hayling Island, England, Tom Slingsby won his third Laser World Championship in four years, and in doing so returned to the top of the Laser class rankings.
In San Francisco Brendan Casey’s 10th place finish in the Finn Gold Cup returns him to the Australian Sailing Team for 2011 while on the other side of America Nicky Souter, Nina Curtis, Olivia Price and Laura Baldwin won Bronze at the 2010 ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championship.
