With another sunny day on the harbour, day 2 of Sail Sydney provided a great opportunity for competitive racing on all courses.
Athletes were met with an 8 – 12 knot easterly that made it shifty and gusty on most courses. In the morning the 29ers, 49ers, Laser full rigs, moths and laser 4.7′s got racing underway. In the afternoon Laser radials, 420’s and laser women’s kicked off racing.
In the 29er class from Queensland Franklin and Brake fought strongly today to take wins back to back in the first two races, putting themselves in 2nd overall. Franklin described how tight the racing was between rivals and NSW competitors Byron White and Ashlen Rooklyn, as they battled race for race today.
In the Laser radials Queensland athletes Jake Lilley and Mitch Kennedy had a tough day racing out between the heads. Lilley commented after racing today, “Out between the heads today was really tricky and you definitely had to be on top of your game.” In the 4.7’s, Youth Olympic competitor and Queensland team member Maddison Kennedy came out with a 1 and a 2 to put her in 2nd overall. In the Full rigs Ryan Palk sailed consistently today with two 7’s to be in 7th overall, in a very competitive fleet of 49.
In the double handers, 420 pair Gough and Galloway hold onto their first position with consistent racing, Galloway described the teams day, “A shifty day where getting into the deep water was crucial”. In the 470 class, Queensland brother and sister pairing Sasha Ryan and Will Ryan are leading after two days racing, next to the lasers in the ‘Sound’. An interesting pairing considering ISAF’s pending decision for 2016 for mixed 470 racing.

With a windier prediction for tomorrow, Queensland athletes will have to tackle some more unfamiliar conditions.
