Visitors to The Wharf Mooloolaba and its immediate surrounds will have a rare opportunity to witness sailing at its most exciting, close up this Friday, December 3rd when Round 1 of the Stallion Marine Sunshine Coast Match Racing Championship kicks off at 12 noon.
Every sailing club in the region has been invited to nominate at least one team for the adrenaline fuelled competition which pits crews against each other ‘one on one’ in identical boats, supplied by the organizers.
John Pearce, Chairman of the Sunshine Coast Sailing Committee, acknowledged Stallion Marine and Certus Group Accountant’s support of this new direction for the Coast. “The pilot event in Noosa earlier this year was a resounding success and Stallion Marine, only four years old itself and new to sponsorship, jumped aboard straight away enabling us to go to the next level,” Mr Pearce said today.
“Our aim is to showcase competitive sailing at point blank range,” Mr Pearce continued. “The sport, by its very nature is not easily accessible to on-shore spectators but on Friday the public will see every tactic in the book from aggressive pre-start manoeuvring to luffing duels under spinnaker.”
The Championship will take place over three consecutive Fridays moving up to Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club for Round 2 on December 10th and returning to Mooloolaba on December 17th for the Final. Days 1 and 2 will consist of a series of round robin qualifying races with a morning competition (12 noon – 3pm) and an afternoon competition (3.30-6pm). A knock out format will determine final positions on Day 3.
Ten teams have entered, two from Maroochy Sailing Club, Mooloolaba Yacht Club and Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club; and one each from Mooloolaba Sailability, Sunshine Coast Yacht Club and Mooloolaba Etchells Fleet, International SB3 Fleet Australia Inc.
The Stallion Marine Sunshine Coast Match Racing Championship has been organized by Maroochy Sailing Club in conjunction with Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club (NYRC) and Mooloolaba Yacht Club (MYC).
