Queensland Academy of Sport sailing team members Alex Gough, Angus Galloway, Josh Franklin and Lewis Brake convincingly won Gold Medals at the International Kiel Week in Germany last weekend.
All four sailors along with female Radial Laser class skipper Ashley Stoddart who finished with the top of the class Youth award in Kiel completed an outstanding result for Australia before the team line up for the 2011 Volvo Wold Youth championship in Zadar Croatia from July 7-16.
In early June the 18 year old 420 sailors Gough and Galloway who race under the prestigious Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron burgee were the star performers winning the Sail Mooloolaba class championship with a perfect score.
Their result in Germany was a fitting reward for the teenage Australian 420 class dinghy champions after gear failure robbed them from winning a medal during the 2010 Volvo World Youth championship in Turkey.
The Australian’s known to race fast in the stronger wind range firmed a grip on a major medal winning three of the first six races.
They continued to revel in 18-20 knot winds but Gough and Galloway still had to apply a safe tactical strategy to finish with the Gold Medal ahead of the 177 boat fleet representing the World’s top sailing nations.
This result has left little doubt about their ability to successfully sail their dinghy in the fast lane when the breeze blows above 15 knots which has secured a top ranking to possibly become the first Australian male crew to win a 420 World Youth championship in Croatia when the final is decided of July 16th.
(Mooloolaba’s Lisa Charlson and her Brisbane Girls Grammar School class mate Sarah Roberts-Thomson showed their class under the coaching of Adrian Finglas to win the 1998 ISAF World Youth series in Cape Town.)
Meanwhile Australian team mates Josh Franklin (18) and his highly skilled 17 year old crew mate Lewis Brake have also emerged as a top medal prospect in the Youth World 29 er class championship following their Gold Medal success at their first ever regatta in Europe.
They finished all eleven races in the top seven and firmed a positive step towards the medal dais when the cleverly outpaced their 82 rivals with wins in races 3, 4 and 5.
The race score of 4-2-5-7-6 wrapped up an impressive win for the young QAS sailors who proved their talent and ambition like Alex Gough and Andrew Galloway to have the potential of taking the next career step towards racing competitively in the Olympic 49er skiff and 470 dinghy classes.
Both Franklin and Brake expressed their skill to handle the stronger winds to record a comfortable Gold Medal result in the 29er class championship.
After a hotly contested week of racing in Kiel Germany, Queensland Sailing Team members and Australian Youth Team members Angus Galloway paired with Alex Gough in the 420 class, and the remarkable 29er team of Josh Franklin and Lewis Brake have taken gold for Australia and Queensland.
Completing the full 11 races, Brake and Franklin fought passed their European and international competitors, to prove that they had the tactics and boat speed to beat anyone in the world. Taking three straight race wins during the middle of the regatta, and an overall consistent performance, gave these Queensland young guns the points lead to secure them the gold medal.
With a five point lead over closest competitors Emil and Lubeck from Denmark, the team were extremely happy with their boat speed and racing decisions, but definitely found the chilly German wind and water a hard physical factor.

John Galloway laid further claim to the title as tactical master of Pioneer Bay when he helmed Queensland Marine Services to a runaway win in the Whitsunday Sailing Club Maurice Drent Boating Services series last week.
Skipper Galloway and crew well known for their ability to sail smart and fast in all wind and sea conditions clearly dominated when they claimed both the corrected time and line honours double.
Queensland Marine Services is always rated among the top contenders to feature in the handicap places and her crew rarely pilot the comfortable cruiser racer to win line honours over the larger and faster Questionalble Logic, Another Fiasco and Reignition.
But that changed in the tricky wind system when both skipper John Galloway and crew sailed every wind variation on merit to win the line honours by 1 minute 59 seconds ahead of the Terry Archer steered AC 40 Questionable Logic while the former Rolex Sydney Hobart Performance handicap champion the Scott Jutson designed Another Fiasco finished third another 3 minutes18 seconds off the pace. SAILABILITY – WHILE NOT WIDELY KNOWN IS A
FANTASTIC SERVICE FOR THE DISABLED!
Bundaberg Chosen For Sailability Queensland State Convention
Friday 2nd to 4th September 2011
Announcing the decision to hold its Annual State Convention in Bundaberg, President of Sailability Queensland, John Hamaty was at pains to stress the importance of the organisation’s “magnificent army” of volunteers.
“Sailability offers real on the water sailing experiences for hundreds of disabled people across Australia every week.” John emphasises that the benefits are huge, “Apart from pure enjoyment and delight, sailing brings a new perspective to many of these peoples’ lives that is like nothing else they ever experience.” But to make it tick every week hundreds of volunteers throughout Queensland give of their time to provide this unique service to their less fortunate friends. “Our sailors,” John goes on, “and their ground support crews engage personally with Sailability clients in a sailing experience that not only leads to real health improvement, but it has in the past introduced eventual Disabled Special Olympics sailors to their first taste of the sport.”
Sailability Bundaberg has been active since 2005 enabling dozens of local disabled people to take advantage of the Sailability service each week. As with other Sailability branches across the globe, the sailing community and especially the Bundaberg Sailing Club have worked hand in hand to establish Sailability Bundaberg, and that support continues today.
The branch is now looking forward to hosting the Annual State Convention of Sailability Queensland at the Bundaberg Sailing Club from 2nd-4th September, kicking off with a Welcome Cocktail Evening at the Lighthouse Hotel. Apart from providing the venue for the Convention opening, the manager of the Lighthouse Hotel, Gavin Sales has opened his motel accommodation to Sailability delegates for the weekend. Gavin said, “We are delighted to be part of the Convention and to provide support for Sailability and the wonderful work it does.”
Meanwhile if you would like to join the friendly team of volunteers, please give Sailability Bundaberg President, Gary Matherson, a call on 4159 4017. Sailing takes place from 9am most Wednesdays and Thursdays during school terms. Gary tells us, “We are keen to recruit many more volunteers so the opportunities that Sailability provides can be extended to more children and adults in the Bundaberg area, who we can get out on to the water with just a little assistance. And no, you don’t have to be a sailor. We also have plenty of rewarding jobs onshore for landlubbers and many of our volunteers learn to sail with us!”

OceanBuro performance sailing and Maroochy Sailing Club have combined their resources to host the important SB3 Wintersun championship on the open offshore course off Mooloolaba next month.
The present Flag Officers of the Maroochy Sailing Club which has the proud history of promoting dingy sailing on the tricky Sunshine Coast estuary for the past 52 years have issued the Notice Of Race which has attracted entries from Hobart, Sydney, Newcastle, Bowen and Sunshine Coast crews.
Heading the small but impressively competitive fleet will be the specialist Middle Harbour Yacht Club skipper and Montreal Olympic Bronze Medallist Ian Brown and his One Design Racing team while Rod Jones who finished 4th in the 2011 World Championship in England returns to the tiller of Club Marine.
“Glenn Bourke our World championship skipper is unavailable so I will get the chance to ‘drive’ again”. Rod Jones said.
However Rod Jones the only skipper to win two Audi Australian IRC ocean racing championships is an ideal deputy having the personal versatility to be an equally proficient crew member after he combined with Glenn Bourke and Greg MacAllansmith to record the best ever result by an Australian crew in the recent SB3 World championship. For 11 years John Clinton has been better recognised for his presence at Audi Hamilton Island Race Week rather than his results on the race course – and it probably will be no different when the 28th edition of the famous regatta is staged in August.
On the water John, and his wife Kim, are highly conspicuous while racing their Oceanis 50 cruising yacht, Holy Cow, because it carries a large headsail that looks like it has been made from the black and white hide of a Friesian cow. The yacht also comes with sound accompaniments – a cow bell and a recording of a cow mooing.
On land, 63-year-old John is also a stand-out, primarily because of his near metre-long and perfectly groomed silver beard. At the same time, anyone who is into country rock music will recognise him as the leader, drummer and vocalist of Australia’s legendary southern-style group, The Wolverines.
This year John and Kim will be returning to Audi Hamilton Island Race Week for the eleventh time while Holy Cow will be making her third consecutive appearance since they bought her in 2009. And once again, included in their crew will be their well-travelled and highly publicised ‘sea dog’ Shoni: she’s sailed every mile aboard the yacht with the owners.
This week Holy Cow was the 98th registration for Race Week, which will be staged from 19 – 27 August. With the 100th entry certain to be lodged before the end of the week, there is little doubt that the final fleet will again number around 200. Read more…
