Dear Australian University Games sports personnel,

SPORT UPDATE
The AUS website is a comprehensive resource for you to find information regarding the Games and your particular sport competition. The sport pages contain all relevant information for participants. Please check your sport page for all the up to date information on your sport. As advised at the competition management training session there are no sport specific meetings this year. Tthe sports pages are one of the main sources of communicating information to the participants about the sport and/or venue. Particular things may included clarification of specific rules, team duties, sports schedules and officials recruitment. If you would like to add some additional information to these pages please contact Dan at dan.rodden@unisport.com.au.  We welcome the input of our competition management team, venues and state sporting organisations!

Understanding of the specific 2011 sports rules are important for everyone involved in their particular sport. AUS rules include specific rules such as game duration, forfeit procedures and penalties, uniform requirements and specific team duties. If a rule is not stated in the AUS rules for your sport the rules stated by the national body of the sport apply. It is imperative that you understand the AUS rules for your sport to avoid any misunderstandings.

Number of registrations at prensent are: 1211
Entries close on the 19th August 2011. We will provide a break down in the next sport e-newsletter of the participant numbers per sports. Expected numbers for the Games are approximatly 6500.

COMPETITION MANAGEMENT
Competition management training sessions two and three will be via an online resource and will be completed in the month of August. Training session two will follow this e-newsletter via email and will need to be completed by Wednesday 17 August. Training session three will follow after the completion of training session two and is to be completed by Wednesday 31 August. Training session four is planned for Monday 19 September and will be held in a location close to the Games centre. This location is yet to be confirmed and will be advised shortly. This will be the final training session and will be a meet and greet with all sport liaison officers and other AUG staff and volunteers. It is really important that all competition management team memebers attend. Be prepared to collect your sports equipment and sport box. There will also be some additions to your CM resource folder.

Training session one recap.

  • Sports rules – Please read and understand the sport specific rules set by AUS. If a rule is not outlined in the AUS rules then the national standard rule applys.
  • Accreditation – Each player will have an accreditation pass. They will need this plus photo identification when they register each day at the sports venues for their particular sport. Once they have shown their accreditation pass and identification card at the sports administration desk they will recieve a stamp. This stamp will then be checked by the referee at the start of every game. This is to ensure fair play and the correct people are playing in our event.
  • PUP - This stands for player under protest and is used when a player has no accreditation pass and/or identification card and they want/need to play in the forthcoming match. A PUP form must be completed at the sports admin desk. One half of the copy is for the athlete and the other for the CM to hold on to and complete the PUP register. Once a PUP form is completed the player will still recieve a stamp but on the team sheet at the sports admin desk under that game they are to play the words PUP and the time the game is to finish will be recoreded. They have one hour or before their next game, which ever come first to resolve their PUP by producing/ purchasing the accreditation pass or identification at the venue or the Games centre. The CM must notify the games centre of this PUP both when the form has been completed by the player and if the PUP has been resolved at the venue.
  • Scoresheets – These need to be sent through to Dan at dan.rodden@unisport.com.au. They will then be formulatd to include some AUG particular information like green and gold votes and match numbers.
  • Officials numbers and details – These need to be sent through to Dan at dan.rodden@unisport.com.au. This is so we know that you have enough officials to run your sport but also so we can produce enough officials packs for each offical. Those officials that want an accreditation pass need to complete a particpation aggrement form.

Reminder:
1. We are still awaiting some profiles of the competition management team. Please answer the following questions and send to Dan at dan.rodden@unisport.com.au. The four questions are, nickname, sporting history (on and off field), favourite thing about your sport and what you are most looking forward to at the 2011 AUG.
2. Confirmation is required of the standard rate of pay for match officials if officials are required for your sport. Please refer to the AUG sports specific rules to establish match durations. If you have these available now please email to Dan at dan.rodden@unisport.com.au. This will greatly assist our budgeting process.
3. A copy of each sports score sheet is requested. Please email to Dan at dan.rodden@unisport.com.au
4. A list of officials by the end of August is to be supplied to Dan at dan.rodden@unisport.com.au

DID YOU KNOW
The 2011 AUG Patrons are:
Vicki Wilson OAM – Australian netball legend
Born in Brisbane in 1965, Vicki Wilson remains one of Australia’s most successful netball players after an illustrious career during which she earned 104 test caps. She spent a year training at the Australian Institute of Sport, first representing Australia in 1985 at the age of 20 and was made captain of her state team, the Queensland Firebirds. In 1996 she was also named captain of Australia, leading the team to the inaugural Commonwealth Games netball gold medal in Kuala Lumpur two years later. Throughout her career, Vicki played in four world championship tournaments, winning a gold medal in three.

In 1992, Vicki was awarded the Order of Australia Medal and the following year also collected the Queensland sportswoman of the year award. Following her retirement from international netball in 1999, Vicki was also presented with the keys to the city of Brisbane and she also holds an honorary doctorate from Griffith University. Vicki spent 13 years on the board of the Queensland Academy of Sport, her tenure finishing at the end of 2010. She also has a regular Wednesday night radio slot on 4BC. In 2004, Vicki was inducted into the Sport Australia hall of fame. Membership is limited exclusively to the top echelon of Australian athletes who have all achieved honours at the peak level of competition. In 2008, Vicki was also inducted into the Australian netball hall of fame.

Between 2006 and 2009, Vicki assumed the role of head coach of the Queensland Firebirds and having qualified from QUT as a physical education teacher, she continues to mentor and train upcoming players.
Joey Wright – Gold Coast Blaze ANBL Coach
Joey Wright was born in Alton, Illinois and played with the Drake Bulldogs basketball squad during the 1986-87 NCAA season. Wright transferred after his freshman year to the University of Texas for a chance to play with the school’s prestigious Longhorns basketball team and, after sitting out in 1987-88, Wright was selected as the Longhorn’s point guard from 1988 through 1991. Wright spent the spring of 1991 at the Chicago NBA tryout camp. However he ended up being selected in the second round as the 50th pick of the NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns. Joey Wright was released by the Suns prior to the 1991-92 NBA season. Drawing upon previous coaching experience with the Austin Cyclones in the Southwest Basketball League (USA) as well as other US teams, Wright sought a coaching contract in the Australian NBL.

Following a horror season 2008/09 in which the Blaze finished at the bottom of the ladder, Wright reversed the team’s fortune, coaching them to their second playoff appearance before being defeated by the eventual champions, the Perth Wildcats.  Wright remains head coach of the Blaze. He also boasts a 21 NBL game winning streak. Joey was awarded the NBL coach of the year award in 2004 and 2007 and following season 2010/11 was voted the NBL coach that most players in the league wish to play for.

Don’t know what any of this means? That’s why its important that you attend the training sessions and undertake the required reading in preparation for the Games!
