Whitsunday Sailing Club brother and sister sailors Klaus and Eva Lorenz have understandably spent the school holidays gaining more important skills about dinghy racing.

Like most children they have left the class room environment to spend the break from school doing what the like best and in the case for the Lorenz siblings it has meant spending two weeks away from sailing of Airlie Beach to visit Yeppoon for the Yachting Queensland youth training camp.

Both Klaus and Eva are members of the Yachting Australia accredited program and are no strangers to testing the skill on the open waters of Rosslyn Bay.

While they renewed their friendships with other Yachting Queensland Youth Development team members their personal focus was on improving their skills under the guidance of Australian high performance coach Adrian Finglas and YQ’s Ben Callard.

This opportunity allowed Klaus and his crew mate Ollie Annear to gain important sail-fast techniques as the face the new sailing season in the highly competitive 420 Olympic training class.

Klaus a self taught sailor who has spent endless hours of mid-week training and weekend racing on Pioneer Bay to achieve a career best Bronze Medal result in the 2011 Australian Optimist championship earlier this year will be presented with a supreme challenge to master the 420 with his school mate Ollie Annear.

Last week the gained some important sail-fast tips from a former Australian 420 champion Adrian Finglas who also coached Lisa Charlson and Sarah Roberts Thomson to win the Women’s World championship in South Africa.

However as Klaus, Ollie and Eva understand their career results are purely determined from making the right decisions on the race course and those skills are progressively refined with the time they are prepared to spend on training.

“Ollie and I are good mates and understand what is needed to become competitive”. Klaus said.

Later this year their skill and boat speed will be measured on the result from the Australian championship on the unfamiliar and open water course on Brisbane’s Deception Bay.

Meanwhile the new young and enthusiastic 420 Whitsunday Sailing Club team have a little over three months to be race ready.

As expected their busy schedule will included mid-week after school training sessions on Pioneer Bay while Klaus will also remained involved with the WSC Optimist sailing team as the their ‘new leader’ Eva Lorenz heads into the National championship with the prospect of being the only Lorenz on the list of entries.

However like her older brother the talented 12 year old promises to continue a climb up the National rankings.

Sail Brisbane NOR & Online Entry now available

Each year Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron hosts the ISAF Grade 2 regatta Sail Brisbane.  The event is normally the first regatta of the Sail Down Under Series, however this year it’s the final leg.

The regatta will run from Wednesday 16 to Saturday November.

Sail Brisbane is also the last regatta of the Yachting Australia Youth Sailing Grand Prix.  Keeping in line with the High Performance Strategy and the Australian Sports Commission’s ‘Pathway to Success’, the Youth Sailing Grand Prix is designed to build a stronger national domestic competition that encourages youth participation and competition.  The Sail Brisbane presentation is where the winners will be announced.

The Notice of Race and Online Entry forms are now available from the dedicated race website.  Sailors intending on racing in the regatta are encouraged to enter the event early.

Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron recently hosted Queensland Youth Week incorporating the Australian Youth Championship with 238 entries.  The expansive rigging lawns were bustling however there was still plenty of room to move across the grassed area.

“Sail Brisbane is another chance for us to show off our expansive facilities here at the Squadron.  The regatta is of international standards and we always look forward to welcoming foreign visitors to our club, said RQYS Commodore Greg Clarke.

Sail Brisbane launches a busy summer program for Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.  The active club will host the Laser, Sharpie, Optimist and 29er Australian Championships, the Australian Youth Championships and then the Laser Masters World Championship in March.

Tasmanian State Champion Sophie Chesterman is one of a growing list of young sailors flying into the region for Sail Mooloolaba’s weekend regatta, which starts on Saturday at 11.30am. 

Miss Chesterman, selected to represent Australia at the World Championships in San Francisco this July, will compete on a Laser 4.7 dinghy, one of 18 different boat classes in action at the prestigious event, which incorporates State Championships for the Optimists and Moths. 

“I have sailed in every other state except Queensland,” Miss Chesterman, age 16, said today.  “On holiday here, I’ve watched the boats from the shore so many times, so I’m itching to get out there and have fun!” 

Tasmania’s Youth Sailor of the Year who trains four times a week and twice before school, will have to defeat Matthew Flinders Anglican College student Madi Kennedy, also 16, to win the Laser 4.7 event.  Kennedy, the Girls Australian Youth Champion, represented Australia at the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore last year. 

Nine year-old Hamish Swain will also catch a flight this week to reach Mooloolaba in time for the nine day ‘festival of sailing’.  He and his friend Aiden Gummow, also 9, will travel from Airlie Beach to compete in the Optimist Green Fleet section of the regatta. 

“He absolutely can’t wait,” Mrs Swain said.  “The boys are taking their own sails, but hiring Optis in Mooloolaba.  Hamish loves going to regattas, he says he makes a new friend every time.  At the Nationals this year he made friends with a boy from Western Australia whom he hopes might also be entering.” 

Hamish is one of six representatives from Whitsunday Sailing Club signed up so far. 

The regatta, in its second year, brings together sailors of all ages from grass root level through to national and Olympic standard.  Pint-size Optimists will compete alongside sports boats, Etchells, monohull and multihull boats over four different courses both in the river and on the open water off Mooloolaba Beach.                                                                                                                  

The unprecedented line up of activities planned for Sail Mooloolaba (June 3-9) begin this Friday when Sailability Sunshine Coast will be in action from 9am at Mooloolaba Marina.  A schedule of events is attached.

•            The 2011 Queensland International A Division Catamaran Championships 
•             (The Regatta) will be held between 22nd April 2011 and 24th April 2011.
•             The organising authority for this Regatta is the Australian International A Division  Catamaran Association [AIADCA] and the Humpybong Yacht Club (HYC)

The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules  Sailing (RRS) 2009-2012, the national prescriptions, the special regulations Part 2 of Yachting Australia, the Class and Championship Rules (except as any of these are altered by the Sailing Instructions) and by the Sailing Instructions.

The annual Sprints Regatta, held over the June long weekend, will this year include the Inaugural Round Magnetic Island Marathon, the QLD Tasar State Titles and is also a round of the Nacra NQ Super Series.

 Sprint races will be held on Saturday 11^th and Sunday 12^th June and are open to all off the beach dinghies, multi-hulls and yachts. One design and mixed fleets can expect to compete in many races with close racing over short courses.

 The Inaugural Around Magnetic Island Race will be held on Monday 13^th June. Any off the beach boat with a VYC yardstick 108 or under and Safety Cat 5 yachts are invited to enter this 24NM one lap race of the island.

TSC is expecting a strong fleet of dinghies and catamarans including F18’s to compete and is hoping the race will rival the Round Dunk Island race held at Mission Beach annually.

 It has recently been announced that the Formula 18 class will be holding its National Titles later this year in conjunction with the Magnetic Island Race Week. The NQ Sprints will serve as great practice for the fleet as well as an opportunity for all sailors to enjoy the beautiful waters and conditions of Townsville.

 The rivalry between NQ sailors Mick Guinea and Adam Beattie who finished 5^th and 6^th at last years Nacra World Titles respectively is set to continue at the regatta.

 Local sailor Aaron Linton who has finished 2^nd at the last two Tasar Nationals, is expected to have a strong showing in his home waters.

 Are you looking for a mid-winter break from the southern chill? How do 28^oC days and 16^oC nights with 22^oC water temperature appeal to you this June?

Now after 23 years of bumping and bashing over and surfing down the waves the little tri of many names including Riverside Oaks, ATL Composites Duck Nuts and more recently Ensign Racing Moving Finger successfully defended her Queensland Multihull championship on Brisbane’s Moreton Bay last weekend.

Her present owner Robert Dean was not onboard when skipper Brett Whitbread, Joel McDonald, Andrew Barney and Ensign Ship Brokers Lee Randall overcame a shaky start to win the championship by 1 point clear of the George Owen helmed Mad Max while Keith Glover steered Trilogy into third another point off the pace.

Crew spokesperson Lee Randall who races regularly with Brett Whitbread said “We were a little rusty with wine-glassing the spinnaker in race 1 but thankfully the crew got the act together to lead the series after 3 races”.

The little tri is fairly forgiving however Brett Whitbread soon found the speed sailing edge to become involved in a match race against arch rival and multiple Australian trailable Multihull champion Keith Glover’s Trilogy while Mad Max clearly dominated the first to finish prize.

Ensign Racing Moving Finger produced two near faultless tactical performances when they needed it most.

While the Mad Max crew left their rivals to track their speed sailing wake both crews on Ensign Racing Moving Finger and Trilogy became engaged in their own tactical ‘dogfight’ before the evergreen Ensign Racing Moving Finger firmed a tighter grip on the championship trophy with overall wins  in races 2 and 3.

As expected the final raced contested in a lazy wind velocity never allowed either Mad Max, Ensign Racing Moving Finger or Trilogy to sail even close to their handicap ratings but their previous three race results in the stronger breeze paved the way for Robert Dean and the Ensign Racing crew of Brett Whitbread, Joel McDonald, Andrew Barney and Lee Randall to temporarily stow the For Sale Sign while they accepted the 2011 4KQ Queensland Multihull championship trophy.
