Our Rally support for the community doesn’t stop. We have been in constant contact with Amos Osborne, Jonathon Amos’s dad. (The kid with the tongue at Panapompom).  With support from Rotary and ex Rally folk Jonathon received another few treatment of a drug in port Moresby…this was intensive in-patients treatment for three months…unfortunately there been no improvement so Jonathon is eligible for ROMAC…but this means he need to await a surgeon/hospital/anaesthetist etc. willing to donate time etc. I have advised Rotary/ROMAC to tell us if they need cash support.).

The money we raised for Paneati has just been sent to them today (there was doubt about bank details and who would get what so I held off until I had a consistent message from the Clinic’s head nurse and the Chair of the board. All sorted now so some trained electrons are sending the K5000 off.

MV Siletu (the Nimowa ambulance) has blown a cooling hose, special reducing bent one…so I am off to Cummins tomorrow to pick it up and get it couriered to Alotau.

Lastly, for those that think the rally is worthwhile and/or like the Louisiades…could you send me a one or two sentence comment (that I can quote) on how good the rally/and or Louisiades are…we need to compile some quotes for PNGTPA.

Noosa’s Youthsail instructors to show case the beautifulNoosaRiverand surrounds and the largest Sailing Program in the Country.

Round the World Sailor – Jessie Martin and AFL footballer – Clint Bizzell are presenters for Places We Go, now in its 4^th season,

 joined the Noosa Youthsail instructors Ali Blundell and Ryan Palk

to spend the day sailing in the McDonalds – Noosaville sponsored Youth Development Blazer 23.

Picture perfect weather provided a wonderful backdrop as the Blazer 23 weaved in and out of the Youthsail Holiday Program dinghy’s between the Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club andNoosaHeadsWoodBay.

The crew swapped stories and talked about the benefits of the wonderful sport of sailing for kids. The Youthsail program at Noosa delivers over 12000 lessons per year including around 2000 in their Access Disabled Program and has been a finalist in the Australian Yachting Awards for the last 2 years running.

Ryan Palk will be leaving next month for the European Laser series whilst Ali Blundell will be sailing with Troy Forrest and Todd McVay competing at the SB3 Victorian State Champs inGeelongfollowed by the SB3 National Champs inHobartas a lead up to the World Championships in December.

SunshineCoastDestination CEO, Steve Cooper added “Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL) is excited to welcome and  host Channel 10’s Places We Go program on theSunshineCoast.  The crew have been capturing the more adventurous attractions in our region including the iconic Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club with presenter Jesse Martin taking to the waters with some of the up and coming younger local sailing talent. Due to be televised in March, the program will provide a perfect boost to the Club in exposure and value for the wider Noosa region moving into the 2012 holiday season.”

THE 17th annual Queensland Sport Awards Presentation was held on Monday evening, in the Great Hall at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Queensland sport’s black tie “night of the year” centred on the announcement and presentation of 11 Sport Award categories and this year, eleven Queensland Sport Hall of Fame members were installed as Legends.

The spotlights this year was directed at Yachting young guns Lewis Brake and Josh Franklin who proudly accepted the 2011 Queensland Junior Sport Team of the Year award.  With family and friends to support them the team shared the stage with such sporting greats at John Eels, Samantha Stosur, Rob Laver and Wally Lewis.

” It is such and honour to be up on the stage, walking after the legends of 2011, its amazing” Brake said moments after accepting the award.

The Queenslander’s were nominated for the award after having earning their spot with wins in Europe and here in Australia. Racing on an international stage in the 29er class and racing against some of the best sailors in the world.helm and oldest of the pair Franklin commented on the enormous size of the event, and the pure excitement of holding the trophy in his hands. “it was crazy talking in front of 1000 people, but just such an amazing experience”  What got the team to this point was all the support from  family, Yachting Queensland, the Queensland Academy of Sport.

Yachtings second nomination was Australian and international sailing great Mathew Belcher who was a finalist in the Sportsperson of the Year Award. Up against an amazing list of athletes such as Tennis’s Samantha Stosur, Belcher’s inspiring success in the olympic 470 class with Beijing Gold Medallist Malcolm Page, this year has seen them become World Champions, European Champions and North American Champions. Yachting Queensland President Ken Hurling commented during the night,  ” although Mat didn’t take the award out he was nominated, he made it through to the final, an extremely high honour”

With such an amazing night coming to a close, Sailing in Queensland has taken another step forward, and has gained exposure as one of the most successful competitive sports in the State and in Australia.

THE Gold Coast has taken its place among the great Australian Cities after winning the 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid in St Kitts & Nevis said Premier Bligh today.

Ms Bligh said the Games could generate up to $2 billion in economic benefit with up to 30,000 full time-equivalent jobs created between 2015 and 2020.

Over $500 million will now be invested on sport and transport infrastructure as a direct result of the successful bid.

“Congratulations to the Gold Coast, to Queensland and Australia – we did it!” said Ms Bligh.

“Our united community welcomes these games.

“In 2018 we will be ready to host a unique world- class and friendly event that builds on the Commonwealth brand and enhances our city’s reputation.

“This city will be transformed with new infrastructure and a buzz that only a big international event like this can bring.”

The Premier said the successful bid to host the games would mean infrastructure upgrades including:

• Increasing the capacity of Metricon stadium from 25,000 to 40,000 seats
• New badminton and mountain bike facilities
• A world class squash complex
• Development of the Coomera Sports and Leisure Centre.
• Upgrades to the Broadbeach Bowls Club, Gold Coast Hockey Centre and the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

“Ever since I picked up the phone to the President of the Commonwealth Games Association Mr Sam Coffa during the Beijing Olympics to suggest our games bid I knew the Gold Coast was in with a chance,” said the Premier.

“Today we hit the bullseye – 2018 is the Gold Coast’s time to shine!”

Ms Bligh paid tribute to Sri Lanka’s bid city Hambantota.

“Make no mistake this was a tough contest and all Queenslanders should be thrilled with the result,” she said.

“These games will bring superb tourism opportunities for the Gold Coast and for Queensland.

“The Games will also act as a catalyst to fast track infrastructure development.

“We will see new sporting facilities, improved transport and a new Health and Knowledge precinct adjacent to the $1.76 billion Gold Coast University Hospital.

“We have made a promise to the Commonwealth Games Federation and will deliver on this promise.”

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid Chairman, Mark Stockwell said the whole Bid team is overjoyed with the result.

“Thank you to everyone that contributed to the Bid and this outstanding result, it was a collective effort and one that Gold Coasters, Queenslanders and all Australians should be very proud of,” Mr Stockwell said.

“The Games will put the spotlight on the Gold Coast, and whilst we don’t want to lose our ‘famous for fun’ character, we do need to reinforce our capabilities as a serious business community with strengths across a number of diverse industries.

“A lot of very hard work went into the Bid but it doesn’t stop there – we need to put the same amount of energy and passion in to prepare and deliver the very best event the Commonwealth has ever known.”

“Congratulations Gold Coast – let the Games preparations begin,” Mr Stockwell said.

THE winners of the six trophies for the annual Yachting Queensland Awards have been announced, after detailed decisions were made by the Yachting Queensland board.

First to be announced was North Queensland Sailor Michael Guinea from Townsville sailing Club. This year Guinea was nominated for Male Sailor of the Year or The Wyuna Trophy. The results Guinea has achieved over the past few years are quite outstanding. Amongs the difficulties of travel, cost and regatta venues Guinea’s results are truly outstanding. His most outstanding results came this year where he placed 8^th at the F18 Australian Championships 6^th in the F18 Texel Dutch Open and 34^th from a fleet of 400 in the infamous Round Texel Race.

Queensland Female Sailor of the Year the Jenny VI Trophy has been appropriately awarded to Lyndall Patterson. Her incredible win at the Laser class 2010 Grand Masters World Championships, gave Patterson the edge over her other nominees. Not only a competitive sailor but a mother of two and an incredible roll model for fellow sailors Patterson is an extremely well deserved nominee.

The Simba Trophy or Junior Sailor of the Year award this year has been given to Gold Coast sailor Tom Siganto. This trophy is awarded to a skipper or crew for their outstanding performance at club, state or national events during 2010 -11. Siganto was the overall winner of the South Queensland Sabot Association trials and river trials as well a competitively placed 3^rd in the 2010 Sabot National Championships held in Tasmania. Siganto has now stepped from his Sabot into the high performance 29er class and is hoping to be racing at the top of the fleet at this years Australian Youth and Open Championships.

The second youth award is the Barrenjoey Trophy which is awarded to Queensland’s Youth Sailors of the Year. This award is given to athletes who have competed at a high level both nationally and internationally. This year the trophy has respectfully been awarded to 420 / 470 pair Angus Galloway and Alexander Gough. These young Queenslanders have proudly represented Australia winning the 420 class during Kieler Woche in Germany, placing 3^rd at the ISAF Youth Worlds in Croatia and taking Gold at the Junior 420 European Championships in Belgium.

The Wistari Trophy for Queensland Offshore Sailor of the Year, is to be awarded to the owner or skipper of a yacht that has excelled in a Blue Water event or series during 2010 – 11. Sportsmanship and contributions to the sport in general may also be considered in the allocation of this award. Nonetheless this year the Wistari Trophy has been awarded to Rudy Weber from the Cleveland Yacht Club. Webers results speak for themselves winning the PHF overall division, the PHRF Division 3 and Veteran class of this years Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race.

The final award the Solo Trophy is presented for outstanding services to the sport of boating in Queensland. Such services could be in the areas of administration, event management and associated training. It is envisaged that nominees will have given some years of significant service to the sport of sailing. This year Bill Thordurn from Brisbane shun above the other nominees due to his years of contribution to the sport. Both a life member of the Brisbane Sailing Squadron and the Queensland 16ft Skiff Association, Thordurn’s years of service in administration and sailing associations has been invaluable.

The venue for the award presentation will be stated by Yachting Queensland in the coming weeks.

Their top results came after winning both the Australian youth and open 29er Championships. The team then travelled to Europe where they took gold at Kiel Week and secured a well earned fourth at the ISAF Youth Worlds in Croatia.

The Queensland Sports awards are conducted annually to recognise the outstanding achievements of Queenslanders each year in sport.

Upon receiving the letter from QSport the young Queenslanders were excited to know that their hard work had been well recognised. They will now attend the official black tie dinner at the Brisbane Convention Centre on the 21^st of November.

The young team are again proof of the high level that athletes in the Queensland Sailing Team have reached in the past two years.

Not until the final draw of the official Yachting Australia Awards dinner last night did Queensland 420 and now 470 pair Angus Galloway and Alexander Gough released what their accomplishments meant, when they took out the Youth Sailor of the Year Award.

In a competitive category of entries including; Women’s Match Racing skipper Olivia Price, Australian Youth Sailing Team members Matthew Wearn, Ashley Stoddart and International Cadet sailors Anton and Julian Sasson, the experienced Queenslands claimed the prize and were extremely grateful.

The 420 team’s success came in Europe this year where they won both Kiel week the Junior Europeans, and finished a respectable 3^rd in the ISAF Youth World Championships.

“We would both personally like to thanks Gill the Queensland Academy of Sport, Yachting Queensland and our club RQYS for their support, but we would also like to thank family and friends for getting us to this point in our sailing career and thank them for their support”  Galloway said after the dinner. “Another huge thank you must go to our longtime coach Adrian Finglas, he has got us to the point we are today”

Held at Sydney’s Luna Park Crystal Palace, the aim of the awards is to recognising outstanding achievements in the sport of sailing over the last year.

Not only did this young team represent Queensland proudly, but our own Lyndall Patterson took out  Female Sailor of the Year. Patterson’s success came after winning the 2010 Laser Radial Grand Master World Championships at Hayling Island in England.

The sit down dinner and large audience made for a spectacular night of honourable presentation. Gough commented on the impressive nature of the venue and its great set up, topping last years dinner.

the other two athlete based awards went to Tom Slingsby with Male Sailor of the Year and finally Sailor of the Year with a Disability Queenslanders Daniel Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch.

However as one year draws to a close, another year opens and these world class Queensland sailors are now in transit to Melbourne where they will train before  Sail Melbourne’s racing kicks off.
