Report – Ashley Stoddart – Delta Lloyd Regatta – Netherlands

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Dear Supporters,

As I write this it is the day before Sail for Gold, my next regatta. I have well and truly settled into the new accommodation here in Weymouth and have had a few training sessions. I am fully registered and my boat is ready. So I will back track a little to the events of last week, which was in a little town called Medemblik, in the Netherlands where the Delta Lloyd Regatta was held.

Delta Lloyd was my first ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta of my European summer trip and was a great way to start things off! Apart from the second day of racing-races 3 and 4, the breeze blew strongly offshore and accompanied by the short chop made for interesting racing in such a competitive fleet. I managed quite a consistent series with many top

10 finishes and after the 5th day of racing actually qualified for my first medal race in 8th position with the opportunity to move to 7th!

(The medal race is the final race of the series, where the top 10 finishers race for the final results, however it is double points making it a crucial race for those on close points.) Being placed closer to shore for the benefit of spectators, the medal race was very shifty and gusty and sailed in about 18-22kts, and the breeze was definitely building. I was always in the top three around the whole course and finally crossed the finish line in 2nd which was an awesome achievement! After the medal race I finished the regatta in 7th position, my best result yet at a Grade 1 event, out of a 58 boat fleet. Read more…

Sunshine Coast Grammar gets trifecta at the ‘Stratogen Chartered Accountants’ Sunshine Coast Inter-school Dinghy Regatta :

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

School Captain Liam McKenzie and fellow year 12 Sunshine Coast Grammar student Elliott Clayton steered the Tewantin Noosa Lions Club Vagabond MkII 3.7m dinghy to an outstanding victory over the weekend to win the Sunshine Coast Inter-school dinghy regatta hosted by Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club with major sponsor Stratogen Chartered Accounts and support from Ronstan and NB Laser.

With 3 first place results in the final series the Grammar boys won with a commanding lead over second placed fellow Grammar students Toby Pearce and Ryan McVay in Casa Noosa with Grammar brothers Ben and Hunter Vercoe third in The Noosa Journal Weekender.

In fickle SE to SW winds the winning crew battled the Noosa River tides and wind shifts whilst putting on display a faultless execution of skills gained from years of sailing on the Noosa River as NYRC juniors.

The regatta, now in its 12 year at Noosa was entered by 30 crews from all over the Sunshine Coast who competed in pool heats, Quarter Finals, Semi finals and then a Finals series . Over the weekend 20 races were conducted.

The 10 finalists including crews from Sunshine Coast Grammar, St Teresa’s Catholic College, Sunshine Beach High, Home School Group and Matthew Flinders and also included two Primary school crews with Max Quirk & Zac Edwards from Matthew Flinders and Eloise Blundell & Eamon Kriz from St Thomas More Primary mixing it up with students from years 11 and 12.

The Primary School Trophy was one by Matthew Flinders with Max Quirk and Zac Edwards finishing 4th overall. Read more…

Born to Sail.

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Southport Yacht Clubs Sophie Lahey enjoyed a special celebration on the eve of her 16th birthday yesterday (March 27th).

The vibrant teenager daughter of successful Southport Broadwater sailors Peter and Veronica Lahey achieved a major career milestone when she crewed with Canadian Olympian Katie Abbott, Tara McCall and Angela Farrell to win the Harken International Women’s match racing trophy on Sydney Harbour last Friday.

Remarkably the crew who had never sailed together before overcame enormous odds to win the Gold Medal by a narrow 3 second margin in the final.

For Sophie this was a highlight to a career which is destined for success.

The talented teenage 29er class dinghy skipper who normally races in the Southport Yacht Club events on The Southport Broadwater expressed a maturity beyond her age to play an important part in the Gold Medal deciding final.

“It was a rewarding experience one which I will never forget”. She said.

Skipper Katie Abbott who hails from Sarnia in Ontario and represented Canada at the 2008 Beijing Olympic regatta praised the combined skills of her ‘makeshift’ crew.

“We had some interesting moments of the course, but managed to keep the boat going in the trying conditions with some excellent crew work”. She said.

Sophie winner of the International Sail Brisbane 29er class title and now has a special medal taking pride of place in the family trophy cabinet celebrated her 16th birthday racing with crew mate Joel Turner on a windy Southport Broadwater yesterday.

RUNNING THE RHUMBLINES.

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

By Ian Grant.

Veteran Whitsunday dinghy sailors Jim Hayes and Bruce Carter have been instrumental in establishing the Whitsunday Sailing Club as an ‘open house’ training centre.

Both ‘Old Salts’ who prefer to keep the age a secret saying you are only as old as you feel have made an enormous contribution towards the Whitsunday Sailing Club being officially recognised among the best marine based education centres in Australia.

Jim Hayes accredited with a deserved Life Membership medal has been a familiar face around the club for close on four decades while his sailing mate Bruce Carter remains possessed with making up the leeway with his recent appointment as the Vice-Commodore of training.

They are an exceptionally dedicated duo who simply love the sport and are personally committed to helping first time students become accomplished with the required skills to sail free with the wind.

Collectively they have logged an enormous number of miles in various classes from representing Queensland in the Australian Corsair championships to testing their endurance in offshore events.

However their sole purpose remains with welcoming new people to the sport and providing them with the education and confidence to enjoy the experience of developing their personal skills. Read more…
