Dear Supporters,

As I write this it is the day before Sail for Gold, my next regatta. I have well and truly settled into the new accommodation here in Weymouth and have had a few training sessions. I am fully registered and my boat is ready. So I will back track a little to the events of last week, which was in a little town called Medemblik, in the Netherlands where the Delta Lloyd Regatta was held.

Delta Lloyd was my first ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta of my European summer trip and was a great way to start things off! Apart from the second day of racing-races 3 and 4, the breeze blew strongly offshore and accompanied by the short chop made for interesting racing in such a competitive fleet. I managed quite a consistent series with many top

10 finishes and after the 5th day of racing actually qualified for my first medal race in 8th position with the opportunity to move to 7th!

(The medal race is the final race of the series, where the top 10 finishers race for the final results, however it is double points making it a crucial race for those on close points.) Being placed closer to shore for the benefit of spectators, the medal race was very shifty and gusty and sailed in about 18-22kts, and the breeze was definitely building. I was always in the top three around the whole course and finally crossed the finish line in 2nd which was an awesome achievement! After the medal race I finished the regatta in 7th position, my best result yet at a Grade 1 event, out of a 58 boat fleet.

Here is a link for you to watch the medal race: http://www.deltalloydregatta.org/live/live-videosstream/ then click on the arrow “Watch LIVE Videos: and then click on “Medal Race Laser Radial”

I am excited for the racing which will start tomorrow and hope to build on the progress and learning from Medemblik in the UK as well.

I will keep you all up to date as to my racing here!

Thanks for your ongoing support and encouragement.

May 10th, 2011 SM11/007

_________________________________________________________________________________

Three weeks ahead of Sail Mooloolaba Adrian Finglas, Australian Olympic Coach, will join an elite team converging on the coast this weekend (May 14-15) to identify and train Queensland’s youngest sailing talent.

Yachting Queensland’s second Optimist Development Camp for 2011 will take place at Mooloolaba Marina, and has attracted children aged between 8 and 15 from as far a field as Southport Yacht Club and the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.

Finglas will be joined by 2010 Australian Youth Olympic team coach Ben Callard, top Queensland International Optimist Dinghy Association (QIODA) coach Scott McInally and National Champions Angus Galloway and Alex Gough.

Yachting Queensland provides the talent scout for Queensland’s Academy of Sport sailing program in partnership with QIODA and the Maroochy Sailing Club (MSC).

John Pearce, Sail Mooloolaba Committee Chair and MSC Commodore, acknowledged the support of both Yachting Queensland and QIODA in his mission to draw more youngsters into the sport. “It’s great to be able to offer Australia’s youngest sailors access to elite training of this calibre,” Mr Pearce said. “Sail Mooloolaba incorporates the International Optimist class state championship in 2011, so this camp will be invaluable for serious contenders”.

Seventy per cent of medallists from the last two Olympics began on the diminutive Optimist dinghy, which weighs no more than 35kgs fully rigged. Maroochy Sailing Club, based on Chambers Island, now operates the largest fleet of racing optimists on the East Coast of Australia. Nine months ago, the club owned just one.

“We have had a dynamic year,” Mr Pearce acknowledged. “Transporting two containers full of boats from China had its challenges, but junior membership at the club has exploded since their arrival, so it was well worth it.”

The camp, which begins at 9am on Saturday, will focus on boat speed and handling as well as race tactics and discipline.

Sail Mooloolaba’s week-long ‘celebration of sailing’ will take place from June 3rd to 9th, and immediately precedes the Musto Etchells Australasian Winter Championship, also in Mooloolaba.

With 3 first place results in the final series the Grammar boys won with a commanding lead over second placed fellow Grammar students Toby Pearce and Ryan McVay in Casa Noosa with Grammar brothers Ben and Hunter Vercoe third in The Noosa Journal Weekender.

In fickle SE to SW winds the winning crew battled the Noosa River tides and wind shifts whilst putting on display a faultless execution of skills gained from years of sailing on the Noosa River as NYRC juniors.

The regatta, now in its 12 year at Noosa was entered by 30 crews from all over the Sunshine Coast who competed in pool heats, Quarter Finals, Semi finals and then a Finals series . Over the weekend 20 races were conducted.

The 10 finalists including crews from Sunshine Coast Grammar, St Teresa’s Catholic College, Sunshine Beach High, Home School Group and Matthew Flinders and also included two Primary school crews with Max Quirk & Zac Edwards from Matthew Flinders and Eloise Blundell & Eamon Kriz from St Thomas More Primary mixing it up with students from years 11 and 12.

The Primary School Trophy was one by Matthew Flinders with Max Quirk and Zac Edwards finishing 4th overall.

Regatta organiser Paul Blundell commented that again the Inter-school regatta showcased the depth of youth sailing on the Coast and congratulated the schools and clubs that have nurtured these young sailors who will no doubt be the stars of sailing in the future.

The vibrant teenager daughter of successful Southport Broadwater sailors Peter and Veronica Lahey achieved a major career milestone when she crewed with Canadian Olympian Katie Abbott, Tara McCall and Angela Farrell to win the Harken International Women’s match racing trophy on Sydney Harbour last Friday.

Remarkably the crew who had never sailed together before overcame enormous odds to win the Gold Medal by a narrow 3 second margin in the final.

For Sophie this was a highlight to a career which is destined for success.

The talented teenage 29er class dinghy skipper who normally races in the Southport Yacht Club events on The Southport Broadwater expressed a maturity beyond her age to play an important part in the Gold Medal deciding final.

“It was a rewarding experience one which I will never forget”. She said.

Skipper Katie Abbott who hails from Sarnia in Ontario and represented Canada at the 2008 Beijing Olympic regatta praised the combined skills of her ‘makeshift’ crew.

“We had some interesting moments of the course, but managed to keep the boat going in the trying conditions with some excellent crew work”. She said.

Sophie winner of the International Sail Brisbane 29er class title and now has a special medal taking pride of place in the family trophy cabinet celebrated her 16th birthday racing with crew mate Joel Turner on a windy Southport Broadwater yesterday.

Veteran Whitsunday dinghy sailors Jim Hayes and Bruce Carter have been instrumental in establishing the Whitsunday Sailing Club as an ‘open house’ training centre.

Both ‘Old Salts’ who prefer to keep the age a secret saying you are only as old as you feel have made an enormous contribution towards the Whitsunday Sailing Club being officially recognised among the best marine based education centres in Australia.

Jim Hayes accredited with a deserved Life Membership medal has been a familiar face around the club for close on four decades while his sailing mate Bruce Carter remains possessed with making up the leeway with his recent appointment as the Vice-Commodore of training.

They are an exceptionally dedicated duo who simply love the sport and are personally committed to helping first time students become accomplished with the required skills to sail free with the wind.

Collectively they have logged an enormous number of miles in various classes from representing Queensland in the Australian Corsair championships to testing their endurance in offshore events.

However their sole purpose remains with welcoming new people to the sport and providing them with the education and confidence to enjoy the experience of developing their personal skills.

Over the years Jim Hayes has seen and played a role in the development of several young sailors during the Sunday Sabot sessions on Pioneer Bay.

He is an exceptionally modest individual who is never prepared to discuss how many youngsters both male and female which he has encouraged to set their sight on representing the WSC at National championships.

“We offer them the encouragement and the basic training but in the end the race results are always determined by the individual technique and strategy” Jim Hayes said.

Meanwhile Bruce Carter and Jim Hayes remained focused on the future and the role which the sailing club offers within the Airlie Beach and surrounding community.

Recent National championship results achieved by Klaus and Eva Lorenz, Aaron Linton and Jamie Jocheim have confirmed that the initial sail training practices have established the benchmark for other first time sailors to follow.

However while Jima Hayes remains dedicated towards developing new talent his tour of duty will become increasingly busy when the club hosts the 2011 Meridien Marinas Airlie Beach Race Week in mid August.

His knowledge of the local conditions gathered from endless hours assisting with race management and actual club racing has helped to establish the regatta as a major event on the Australian offshore sailing circuit

He will again take his annual holidays to be part of the happy team of Whitsunday Sailing Club members who are proud to be known as a Race Week Volunteer with their combined ‘labour of Love’ rewarded with a multi-million dollar cash flow into the community.
